‘Tourism and Gender in Tanzania’

Despite the substantial participation of women in tourism industry, available records suggest that gender disparities persist and women are misrepresented and segregated while there are limited studies in the area. Nelly’s study intends to investigate the extent of women misrepresentation in the tourism sector in Tanzania in relation to the available social, political and economic structures in local and global contexts. Also, the study will investigate individual woman’s knowledge of the tourism industry in terms of their view of the available opportunities, constraints and the meaning they associate to it, as they are influenced by the existing social and gendered relations. The study intends to compare Zanzibar and Tanzania mainland – Arusha Region. These two areas have substantial number of international visitors and they are impacted by global and local gender relationships, but offer different social patterns.
