‘Prospects of rural tourism for diversification in Botswana – The case of Pandamatenga and Ghanzi’

Botswana’s tourism industry is mainly based on wildlife and wilderness, causing problems such as carrying capacity, tourism leakages and monopoly of the industry by large companies. As a result, there are calls to diversify the country’s tourism product, encouraged by the government. One of the opportunities singled out is rural tourism; nevertheless no deliberate and coordinated efforts have been directed at chronicling the specific opportunities that exist for development of rural tourism in Botswana. It is for this reason that this study seeks to explore the potential of farm tourism development in Botswana. Monkgogi’s study seeks to develop an understanding of the prospects and possibilities of developing farm tourism as an important dimension of rural tourism and rural development.
