10-Day Training and Educational Workshop
November 16-27, 2009 – Wageningen, the Netherlands
This training and educational workshop is an essential component in the projects overall goal “to improve the academic relevance and excellence in education in African partner HEIs around the central theme of sustainable tourism development, poverty alleviation and environmental sustainability”. By bringing together all junior partners from the African HEI and the European experts for 10 days in the excellenty equipped environment of Wageningen University, signifcant steps in the process of knowledge exchange, curriculum as well as skill development could be achieved.
Participants had the chance to:
- present the “tourism” curricula of their university and receive feedback on the content and development
- express the needs of each individual university in the light of incorporating sustainable tourism in the “tourism” curricula
- exchange knowledge about significant theoretical developments in sustainable tourism studies and best-practices in relation to nature protection and poverty alleviation
- participate in lectures as part of the Wageningen MSc Program “Leisure, Tourism and Environment”
- use the facilities of Wageningen University to develop new academic courses and CPD modules in sustainable tourism
During the workshop the participants made the decision to develop 3 academic courses and 3 corresponding CPD modules, which will be implemented in all universities, depending on the individual needs as well as the level and profile of the offered programmes. The courses are developed around the theories of:
- Pro-poor Tourism
- Corporate Social Responsibility
- Community-based Tourism
